Notes on Cyprus:

Cyprus boat holiday
Cyprus info

Experts in the field have reached the conclusion that we are working too hard. Consequently, they further conclude that the working week should be shorter and holidays longer.
Coincidentally, this conclusion follows on the heels of one reached by other experts who have been investigating the habits of those who take holidays.

These have decided that devoting the annual vacation to changing colour from a whiter shade of pale to a deep bronze is no longer the majority's goal - at least, not the only one.
It has nothing to do with those who argue that too much sun is bad for you - a group of people who probably belong to the same club that outlawed the once flaunted merits of going to work on an egg and drinking a pint of milk a day.
Instead, it has more to do with combining the current craze of keeping fit with the need to overcome the guilt felt by those who see holidays as the ideal opportunity to lie on the beach and do absolutely nothing.

One gets the impression that these days it is regarded as being of paramount importance to be seen to be indulging in strenuous activities. Why else would all those exercise bikes and other such paraphernalia be gathering dust in the spare room while their owners go off to a fitness centre and pay handsomely for the privilege of exhausting themselves?

Anyway, those who have done their studies (presumably by taking a long working holiday) are of the opinion that most of us want action packed vacations where rest and recuperation play second fiddle to such pastimes as mountaineering, trekking, scuba diving and windsurfing.
In other words, however late we stay out at night checking the merits of foreign restaurants, clubs and discos, come the sober light of dawn we cannot wait to spend the daylight hours in pursuit of something guaranteed to test our physical fitness to its limits.
Fine, but now we are being asked to take longer holidays and that raises the probability that eventually we shall all be praying to go back to work just to get a rest.
It is a predicament that yet another team of experts is no doubt burning the midnight oil on its bid to come up with a solution.

Whatever the results, it is quite clear that we can either spend a small fortune taking these extended leisure breaks, or rent or buy a holiday home somewhere to save on hotel bills.
There is no shortage of places in Cyprus and the country is ideally situated for such an investment from a variety of viewpoints.
However, once you have purchased a second home it inevitably reduces the choice of destinations to just one.

Its could be then worth a while to rent a holiday home or villa when you are on holidays in Cyprus and then contemplate buying something which moves according to your whim? An exciting notion will be to buy a boat.
The old saying goes that the two happiest days in the life of a boat owner are those on which he or she buys and sells. Times have changed and it seems that an increasing number of owners are selling only because they want a larger vessel.
Boats have changed too. They have become floating homes with more luxuries than one finds in the average house as standard fittings. But before going into detail on that aspect of this nautical notion, it is necessary to put Cyprus into perspective for those who live in the colder climes of other European countries.
First, get rid of that vision of those who take masochistic pleasure in donning thermal underwear, water proof leggings, oil skins and woolly hats and then hang on for dear life as the boat is tossed about in rough seas and pouring rain. This is Cyprus where the sun shines almost every day of the year and where a wide brimmed hat to keep a cool head and a bag full of sun protection creams are much more useful. There are no tides to leave you high and dry and modern navigation technology enables even those who have difficulty finding their way around the garden from getting lost.
Four more marinas are now under construction at various points along

the island's southern coast, Limassol – Paphos area, so with the present two, that makes six different "homes" before you start counting all those small harbours and hidden coves.

These marinas are themselves virtual villages with plenty of neighbours, shops, cafes, and all the facilities one needs. Some even have fitness centres!

Yet another research project has determined that what it terms nautical tourism is headed for a boom in the eastern Mediterranean . That is not surprising. The thousands of islands in the Aegean and the long coastlines of Greece , Syria , Lebanon and Israel are all there to explore and Cyprus is perfectly placed as the base from which to operate. As for the boats, designers have finally realised that part-time sailors have no desire to spend their days scrubbing decks, varnishing the woodwork, polishing everything which should shine, and washing out the bilge. Instead, they demand a home from home with minimum maintenance and maximum comforts.
That is now available. Anything planned with more than an afternoon snooze in mind usually comes complete with a decent sized bed, full shower and a

'normal' toilet, a kitchen or a galley with microwave oven, fridge and ice maker, central airconditioning, and a full entertainment system which includes television, video and CD player. Deep-pile carpeting, of course, and even some of the smaller boats have a central vacuum cleaning system.

It is the age of computers which has transformed the navigation systems, a variety of interlocking gadgets which provide vast amount of information and actually display maps of the area in which you are cruising, pinpoint your position, and ensure you are going the right way. A knowledge of how to do this using paper charts is clearly worth having, but learning is now much easier with the aid of the modern equipment.
As for steering, just feed in the desired destination, turn on auto-pilot and then make sure someone responsible is keeping watch to avoid bumping into a passing cruise ship.
Cyprus has come a long way in the past few years in organising itself as a leisure boat haven. All the big boating names are represented in Cyprus now with full service back-up. Sea Ray, Sunseeker, Cranchi, Princess and Ferretti are just a few which will be familiar.
